About me:

Born Jan 31st, 1953 in Pasadena, CA. Graduated from Stephen F Austin State U (Alpha Kappa Psi) with a degree in Communications/Business in May '75. Made lifelong friends there. Served in the USAF from 1975 to 1979. Served at Dyess AFB TX and Chanute AFB IL (met Phyllis there). Got a one time flight in the rear cockpit of an F-4C Phantom based at Springfield IL (did get a cool call sign - LLAMA). Honorable discharge as Sargant (E-4). Worked at Vought Aircraft in Dallas for 14 years and now retired from there. Became a teacher at age 52 and retired from full time but still enjoy guest teacher work. I guess I did something right as I was nominated (whoever did put me up wanted to stay incognito) and now in Who's Who of American Teachers. Please don't think I'm bragging here but before I went into teaching. some said I would never make it. Sticking with it matters!

School Memories and Stories:

Please allow me to expand beyond school here (see above) but have been able to travel to many places (Canada is awesome) and still enjoy airshows (nothing like the sound of an F16 Viper as it banks and cranks). As a writer, I was honored with being able to fly with the USN Blue Angels in Oct. 2011 at Randolph (flew in their USMC C-130T Fat Albert - a roller coaster on steroids! As of Aug 023, this bird is now a preserved gate guard at Carswell Field in Ft. Worth).

Elementary Schools:

St Marks Shreveport 1
Pleasant Hall Shreveport 2-3
Arthur Circle Shreveport 4
Moron (pronounced Moe-rone) Air Base (Sevilla)Spain Elementary 5
San Pablo Air Base (Sevilla) Spain Elementary 6 (Fall Semester -64)
Torrejon Air Base (Madrid) Spain Elementary 6 (Spring Semester -65)
Two different middle schools
Two high schools

At Heights, the teachers I remember most were Miss Wise, Mrs. Durham, Coach Tatsch, and Coach Boggin plus the great debate teacher, Mr. Nelson..

Additional Note:

On Feb. 9th 2022, the hardest thing that has happened to me was when my wife of 43 years went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In Dec 2021, she was diagnosed with cancer and that, plus a heart attack, resulted in losing her. She's buried at Ft. Sam Nat'l Cemetery where I'll join her when it's my time. I am so grateful for the outreach of many of you, college friends, the church we go to and so many others. I've resumed teaching, writing and photography. Went out to a part of W. TX in June that that I never saw before (Ft. Stockton, Alpine, Ft. Davis, McDonald Observatory and Marfa. Seeing the Marfa lights was unforgettable! Jul 2022, flew out to San Diego to visit the USS Midway Museum, great trip. Also took a fine trip out to Roswell NM in May 3. 2023. June 2024, I visited the great National Museum of Naval Aviation at Pensacola FL (where the Blue Angels are also based) I miss Phyllis a lot, but I know she'd want me to forge ahead. Also just recently joined the American Legion and the Commemorative Air Force Central TX Wing at San Marcos. It is hard to believe that on July 1st, 1975, I started basic training at Lackland AFB. Almost 50 years! 3703 Basic Military training Squadron, Flight 719. I also finally joined the International Society of Aviation Photographers in May 2025. Really outstanding work by others there. John 3:16. July 2025 took me out to the Pacific Northwest for the first time, visiting cousins Jim and Diane Grounds (Diane was D. Comstock AHHS Class of '68) in Oak Harbor WA. Really beautiful country.
Oct 24, 2025 was anything but dull as an F1 Tornado hit our Spring Branch/Bulverde neighborhood. It did minor damage to the house but the backyard looked like Godzilla trampled thru it. It showed God's mercy as if the tornado had gone more to the left, I might not to writing this. Did enjoy a phenomenal Paul McCartney concert the next day. I am so grateful for HIS mercy and good friends as several guys from church (Hillside Fellowship) came over the following week with chainsaws and we cut up a large tree that the tornado literally pulled out of the ground. Lots of free firewood. Last week, what I thought was heartburn resulted in my gut telling me to go to an ER. Glad I did as after the did an EKG I actually suffered a minor heart attack. What is scary is you can have one and not even know it. GOD sure spared me there as I'm feeling OK now. I just returned from visiting the fantastic Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport in Chantilly VA. The Space Shuttle Discovery is one of the display highlights there.

The Space X facility at Boca Chica TX is massive. Went down there July 6 and 7, 2026. I was allowed to get as close as possible to get a photo of this rocket, which is scheduled to lift 2 satellites into orbit.

I returned to visit Stephen F' Austin, my college alma mater, back in Aug 2023. This great place was celebrating 100 years as a school. Returned again in Aug 2025. So many changes, mostly for the better!

After flying in an F-4 Phantom, "flying" in an FA-18 simulator felt like the real thing. This retired FA-18C Legacy Hornet at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola FL, flown by Lt Commander Mark Fox (who retired as a Vice Admiral), shot down an Iraqi MIG-21 on the opening night of Desert Storm in 1991. Legacy Hornets have been replaced by larger and more powerful engined FA-18E/F Super Hornets, which were the stars of Top Gun Maverick (the three used in most scenes are now with the Blue Angels).

The amazing Marfa lights! I had to use zoom lens so the photo is a little grainy.
